Custom Packaging Design - The Microsoft iPod Parody

Why would Microsoft parody it's own product package design?
In a recent parody of Microsoft's own product packaging practices, Microsoft redesigns iPod packaging.

This hilarious send-up illustrates what happens when marketers run amok. Instead of the clean, high value package Apple designed, the end product is cluttered with badges, system requirements, legal copy, third party endorsements, extensive brand statements and sub-statements, and call-outs.

Apple's package design agency would not have allowed this pollution of valuable shelf presence and space. Microsoft has admitted publicly that this parody was created internally. It was made by some product innovation managers in response to Microsoft's habit of creating info-clutter. Instead of having a clear branding and benefit message, the marketing staff attempt to tell the whole story - right down to the last excruciating detail.

The idea that colors have intrinsic and timeless ‘meanings’ is mistaken.  Advanced research in the domain of product marketing indicates that shoppers do not identify particular colors with particular abstract concepts (e.g. the color red with the concepts ‘hot’ or ‘fire’). Rather, the ‘meaning’ of particular colors hinges entirely on the context in which the colors are being used. more>
